Gavin and Stacey’s Christmas reunion special is just one day from hitting our screens and you’ll want to grab your tissues because they’ve marked the occasion by getting the cast together one final time.
Jumping in the hot seats on BBC Radio 2 breakfast show for a hosting takeover, show creators James Corden, 46 and Ruth Jones, 58, were joined by their cast mates throughout the morning, including Joanna Page, Mathew Horne James and Rob Brydon for a very emotional final reunion before the sitcom returns to screens for one last time on Christmas Day at 9 pm.
While most of the radio show was full of laughs and light-hearted humour, as the clock ticked down, James, Ruth and their co-stars got increasingly emotional before they played one final song, Run by Stephen Fretwell and began sharing emotional hugs and kisses on the cheek, celebrating the end of their promotional tour and the official countdown to the episode’s airing time.
It caused a stir with fans who were overwhelmed with emotion upon seeing footage from the moment shared on the station’s official Instagram account. Captioned: “This was so special”, the comment section was quickly filled with bittersweet messages. “I did cry as soon as this intro started today…. This was such a fun and beautifully done show!! Loved it!!! I’ll be crying again on Xmas day, I’m sure ! Xx,” one person said.
“Listening in today was absolutely joyful, like the best early Christmas present ever. Such warmth and humour and fondness for people I can’t even claim to know. So much love for this cast and for the skill in creating a series that has become such a classic,” another fan wrote. Another fan said they “can’t wait” for the special episode but feel “so sad” as it’s the last one.
“So emotional listening, but seeing this is a perfect ending. Thank you all for the memories,” one wrote. Elsewhere, a fan compared the episode to a break-up: “Oh! Oh! I am crying. It must feel like going through a breakup. Such a lovely cast of people. They should all go out and get hammered and have a fight down Caroline Street.” While others said they were “sobbing” after watching it.
With the 90-minute Gavin and Stacey special set to air tomorrow night, the cast has been busy promoting the show and sharing set secrets in interviews. James told Graham Norton on the talk-show host’s self-titled show that they wrapped the show with the final scene of the episode—something that rarely happens in film and TV.
“It was a very, very special day. We really kind of scheduled the show so that the very last line that we’ll ever hear in the episode is the last thing we shot.” James said. “Which anyone will tell you is so rare that you ever do. Normally, your last day, you’re out on a motorway on your own in a car, and people go, “Well done,” and you go, ‘Bye then’.” He added: “But we really felt like we wanted everybody to be there at the very, very end, and it was just a lot of tears.”

James also revealed that while filming was pretty emotional for everyone, there was one actress who found it harder than the rest; Joanna. He recalled being on set and she would interrupt and say through tears: “Oh my God, can you believe this is the last time we’re ever going to be at Gwen’s?” He added that it went on for “basically” six week and said: “It’s been a lot of goodbyes”.
