Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have reportedly hit back at claims she ‘set alarm bells ringing’ at the palace before their marriage.

According to reports, it was Meghan’s Vanity Fair interview in 2017 that reportedly worried aides at the palace.

Meghan, 43, and Harry, 40, announced their engagement in late 2017 after their romance went public in 2016. They tied the knot at St George’s Chapel in May 2018.

Meghan Markle ‘set alarm bells ringing’ before wedding to Prince Harry

In 2017, months before her wedding to Prince Harry, Meghan was on the cover of Vanity Fair. In an article for the magazine, she had a candid discussion about her romance as well as other topics.

According to the Daily Mail, the article said at the time: “As Markle tells Vanity Fair about her bi-racial background, her romance, and her hit series, Suits, it seems that this 36-year-old American may be just the woman for Britain’s iconoclastic royal.”

While people were pleased that Harry had found a serious girlfriend, the article did set alarm bells ringing.

However, the publication claimed the article spread didn’t go down too well at the palace.

“It was like a punch to the solar plexus,” a source claimed. “We do not expect friends of members of the royal family to give such interviews.”

The article was also published months before Harry and Meghan’s engagement was officially announced.

“While people were pleased that Harry had found a serious girlfriend, the article did set alarm bells ringing,” the source continued. “It made people worry that Miss Markle was seeking to use the relationship for publicity purposes.”

“We’re in love. This [time] is for us. It’s part of what makes it so special, that it’s just ours. But we’re happy. Personally, I love a great love story,” Meghan told Vanity Fair at the time.

According to the Daily Mail, a source for Harry and Meghan has hit back at the claims the magazine interview set alarm bells ringing. They said Kensington Palace “signed off” Meghan’s interview in 2017.

Harry and Meghan allegations in Vanity Fair

Elsewhere, a more recent piece in Vanity Fair has criticised the couple’s alleged treatment of staff.

Sources claimed the duchess was “really, really awful” to work for, with some staff fearing they’d be “thrown to the wolves at any given moment”.

“You can be yelled at even if somebody doesn’t raise their voice,” a former employee allegedly told the magazine. “[It’s] funny that people don’t differentiate between the energy of being yelled at and literally somebody screaming at you.”

The article also detailed struggles within Meghan’s Archetypes podcast team. Staff reportedly took extended breaks and even quit due to the “painful” working environment.

Despite the uproar surrounding the article, the Sussexes declined to provide a public comment. However, reports claim they feel “distressed” and “upset” over the claims.

The Sussexes’ rocky relationship with the media has been well-documented, and this latest controversy is unlikely to ease tensions.
