Floyd Mayweather has been told his record of 50-0 is invalid and should only be recognized as 49-0, level with Rocky Marciano.

Floyd Mayweather 50

Comments from several forums investigated by World Boxing News see Mayweather’s fiftieth fight under severe questioning. It’s the first time WBN has checked how the fans feel about Mayweather claiming to be 50-0.

The 47-year-old, who schooled many opponents during his career, hung up his professional gloves in 2017. His last bout against Conor McGregor was sanctioned officially, but many see the victory as hollow.

McGregor was entirely out of his depth and couldn’t throw punches properly despite his amateur pedigree. Detractors say the triumph should be wiped from Mayweather’s pro record.

One commenter said, “Then there are people asking if 50 should count against Conor and all this crazy stuff. It’s obviously amazing but seems like a fabricated record to me.”

Another stated, “He is 49-0 after this fight as I don’t consider it or Conor a legitimate achievement. Even Mayweather has said in interviews that he doesn’t care whether it is considered a true 50-0 or if it adds to his legacy. He seems adamant in admitting he wants that money.”

A third added, “Floyd Mayweather is not 50-0; he’s level with Rocky Marciano on 49-0, and everybody who knows boxing knows that!”

However, Mayweather recognized the win and printed merchandise to mark his achievement. Marciano should be sharing the record, though, and Mayweather’s claim only harms the legacy of a fellow superstar.

Marciano left the sport in 1955 as the undisputed heavyweight champion, winning a battle over Archie Moore, undoubtedly securing his legacy as one of the greatest fighters ever to put on the gloves.

Some defended Mayweather’s record, though, without stating he should be 50-0.

“Floyd’s last ten opponents combined have a record of 438 wins and 29 losses [93.3% win rate] before fighting Floyd. Then a record of 29 wins and 20 losses [68.9%] win rate after Floyd.”

This statistic is similar to how Canelo dishes out paychecks in this era before his victims retire or become inactive in the aftermath.

Ironically, Canelo lost to Mayweather when chasing the same record in 2013 before adopting the Mayweather blueprint of fighting on Mexican weekends in Las Vegas.

Like Canelo, many of the best boxers in history have losses on their records. Very few, like Mayweather, have their victories questioned. – If you use these WBN quotes, please link back to the source: https://www.worldboxingnews.net/2024/10/19/floyd-mayweather-50-0-record-invalid/
