Floyd Mayweather vs. John Gotti and chaos are pretty synonymous with each other. When they last fought each other back on June 11, 2023, things went so out of control that the referee Kenny Bayless had to stop the match in the middle of the sixth round. On August 24, 2024, during their rematch, things got messy again, and this time, referee Hector Afu was on the receiving end.

During round two of the rematch at Arena CDMX in Mexico City, the referee penalized Mayweather for a shot that seemed to be behind the head. This call certainly infuriated the ‘Money’ that led him to get involved in a heated conversation with referee Afu. Eventually, Afu was replaced by a new referee, the Mexican official Alfredo Uruzquieta.

Interestingly, the match’s highlight wasn’t just this bizarre referee change moment. Several rounds were extended over the official two-minute limit, leaving both fighters confused. However, in the end, the legendary Mayweather remained undistracted and won the match against Gotti.

Fans In Frenzy After Floyd Mayweather Fires Referee Hector Afu

The referee change incident in the Mayweather vs. Gotti III rematch was certainly unique in its own way. In the end, ‘Money’ settled his scores with Gotti, but fans were certainly left surprised by all the drama at Arena CDMX in Mexico City. One boxing enthusiast wrote, “Lmao, can’t believe I missed this.”

A fan also accused Mayweather of buying referees that helped him achieve an undefeated professional boxing record, his comment read, “He’s been doing that for years.. bought and payed for .. that’s why his record so good.”

“Is that not unethical? The referee being an employee of one of the boxers?” another fan questioned the legitimacy of Mayweather vs. Gotti III.

Mayweather’s problems with referees aren’t new. A fan commented, “Floyd always has a problem with refs.”

Another fan felt it was a demeaning act by Mayweather, as he wrote, “Embarrasing from Floyd honestly.”

Well, it’s rightly said what’s done is done. Even if fans question the legitimacy of referee change, Floyd Mayweather has already defeated John Gotti III. Now, it remains to be seen if any of the boxers make a comment on the bizarre incident.
