Sabrina Carpenter had fans bringing up Britney Spears as she cozied up to the pop star’s former rival Christina Aguilera in a new video.

The duo delighted fans as they took part in a playful clip posted by the Dirrty singer on her social media channels.

The glammed up pop stars looked like the best of pals as they shared a pink couch, set to audio of Kylie Jenner gushing about her mother Kris Jenner.

But a few fans couldn’t help but bring up Spears in the comments of the TikTok video Christina posted.

‘Britney shade,’ one tweeted with a crest-fallen smile.

One referenced Britney’s recent video where she questioned Sabrina’s on-stage smooch with an alien at the VMAs.

‘This after the Britney video girl?’ they wrote.

Carpenter, as well as Megan Thee Stallion and Tate McRae, made references to the Princess of Pop during last week’s MTV VMAs.

Amid the Espresso singer’s performance at the ceremony, she notably played a snippet from Spears’ track, Oops!…I Did It Again and also kissed an alien on stage – seemingly referencing to Britney and Madonna’s 2003 kiss.

In a clip posted to her Instagram, Britney admitted that she did not watch the show, but saw snippets on YouTube, including Sabrina’s performance.

‘Why is she kissing an alien on stage?’ the star questioned, but added, ‘I adore her. I love her to death.’

‘I didn’t understand that part. Why didn’t she kiss a girl? Like, that was weird. But, I also thought that the whole thing was kind of like, weird altogether…’

Spears also gushed about how Carpenter talked about her on the red carpet, and said, ‘This Sabrina girl, she said my name on the red carpet.’

‘And I thought that was kind of cool because I forget that I’m famous sometimes,’ she explained, and humorously added, ‘Cause I’m a mom…I’m kind of old…’

Towards the end of the reel, Britney continued, ‘But I thought it was kind of cool that Sabrina Carpenter said something about me.’

The star then gave a shocked expression and joked, ‘Thanks, that’s cool. She made me cool. Okay, maybe not.’

During her performance on stage at the 2024 MTV VMAs, Carpenter belted out lyrics to three hit tracks: Please Please Please, Taste and Espresso.

While joined by an alien, she also grooved alongside dancers that were dressed up as astronauts. It seemingly was another reference to Spears and her music video for Opps!…I Did It Again – which also featured an astronaut.

Meanwhile, Sabrina did indeed collaborate with Christina recently for a project celebrating the 25th anniversary of the legend’s 1999 debut album, Christina Aguilera.

Sabrina and Machine Gun Kelly sang with Christina for an upcoming episode of Spotify Anniversaries that honors the original album.

‘I wanted to celebrate the 25th anniversary of my debut album in a way that brings together the past and present,’ Christina told Rolling Stone.  ‘I’ve always enjoyed reimagining my songs with different styles and audiences, as well as playing with sounds and arrangements that showcase how all music can be timeless.’
