National Television Awards viewers were left cringing thanks to a series of awkward moments.

Mr Bates vs The Post Office was the big winner of the NTAs on Wednesday picking up the New Drama gong and the special Impact Award while lead star Toby Jones won Drama Performance. It was also a great night for ITV soaps with Coronation Street’s Peter Ash picking up Serial Drama Performance following Paul Foreman’s powerful motor neurone disease storyline and Emmerdale winning Serial Drama.

Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly were also big winners, scooping their 23rd TV Presenter award and with  I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! winning The Bruce Forsyth Entertainment Award. Not everyone finished the night a winner and there were more than a few awkward moments when the results came in…

Martin Lewis ‘livid’ after losing

Martin Lewis appeared to be left ‘fuming’ after losing out on an award. The money saving expert was nominated in the Factual Entertainment category for ITV’s The Martin Lewis Money Show, however, he missed out to Stacey Solomon’s fronted Sort Your Life Out.

Stacey also beat Clarkson’s Farm, Gogglebox and The Yorkshire Vet. ITV viewers took to X, formerly known as Twitter, after the award was announced to comment on Martin’s supposed disappointment at missing out.

“Martin Lewis didn’t look too happy,” shared on viewer while another said: “Martin Lewis is livid.” A third added: “You could tell Martin Lewis was raging he wanted to win he’s sitting there thinking I do all this s** for what nothing.”

Winner reveal blunder

ITV made a huge blunder during the NTAs as one category winner was announced at the wrong moment. Viewers were left baffled when Coronation Street’s Peter Ash – who went on to win best Serial Drama Performance – was displayed in character on screen while another category was being announced.

A clip of Paul Foreman in the ITV soap flashed up on screen while the nominees for Reality Competition were being read out. One confused viewer wrote: “Why did a dying Paul just pop up on our screens? calm down itv,” while another added: “Why was Paul on my screen there?”

Strictly wins despite scandal

Strictly Come Dancing has had a difficult few months after months of abuse allegations, with the teaching methods and behaviour of the professionals in rehearsals under the spotlight. Despite the controversy – and the outcome of a report examining the bullying allegations not yet being released – Strictly won the Talent Show award.

Accepting the award, Tess Daly described the win as the “perfect gift”. Tess Daly said: “All of us who work on the show want to express a heartfelt thank you to each and every one of you who voted for us.” Co-host Claudia Winkleman thanked the “wonderful team and the celebrities who take part”.

Ghosts star fumes at award upset

Kiell Smith-Bynoe was left outraged after Ghosts – in which he stars as Mike Cooper – lost out to Mrs Brown’s Boys for Best Comedy. The actor was seen glaring at the winners as show creator Brendan O’Carroll took to the stage to accept the award.

It was the second consecutive year Mrs Brown’s Boys has beaten Ghosts at the awards. Just weeks earlier the actor had urged his followers: “Don’t let Mrs Browns Boys beat us again.”

Bradley Walsh swears at Ant and Dec

The Chase host Bradley Walsh jokingly hit out at Ant and Dec after they took home the TV Presenter award for the 23rd time. The Geordie duo beat Bradley, Alison Hammond, Stacey Solomon and Claudia Winkleman to the award.

After the award was announced, Bradley booed the presenters before attempting to drag the duo off the stage. While doing so, he quipped: “Taking the p**s!” Ant and Dec saw the funny side of Bradley’s stunt before going on to thank those who voted for them.
