There’s a big twist brewing on Emmerdale it seems following a worrying scene with Joe Tate.
The character made his comeback to the ITV soap this week amid a twist for Kim Tate and Will Taylor. Ned Porteous has reprised the role after six years away, with Joe’s real reasons for being back remaining under wraps.
It seems he wants revenge on Kim after she ordered his d3ath back in 2018, leading to him going into hiding. Now he’s back, but what has brought him back to the village after all these years?
More is set to be revealed about the plot in the coming weeks, but a scene on Thursday no doubt sparked concern for the character. A health twist appeared to be hinted at, as Joe was seen struggling before taking medication in a hurry.
Nothing was teased about the scene before it aired with no explanation given. But as Joe returned to his room at the B&B, he suddenly seemed to feel unwell as he began breathing weirdly.
It looked like he was about to cough or choke, or maybe he was having some sort of panic attack. As Joe took off his jacket he suddenly ran over to the bed and began taking deep breaths.

As he rummaged through his bag, multiple packets of pills were flung out onto the bed until he found the one he was looking for. Joe rushed to take the medication before appearing to be in pain.
But what is wrong with him, and why is he on medication? Why were there so many different packets of pills in his bag? It’s been teased the character is hiding something dark, amid the Will d3ath twist.
Joe is now “protecting” Kim by not revealing what really happened on Christmas Day, while it’s clear he’s up to something. But it seems he’d hiding something even bigger, and it could cause big drama as the new year begins.
Teasing the big twist, Emmerdale producer Laura Shaw confirmed that “trouble” was ahead from the moment Joe comes back, while she also teased something “dark” was remaining under wraps. Laura spilled of the return: “We are thrilled to welcome Ned back to Village as the complex and captivating Joe Tate. From the moment Joe arrives on screen, it’s clear there’s trouble ahead but Joe’s hiding an even darker secret that could see 2025 start off with a huge bang.”
