Kate Garraway ‘s broke down in tears at the National Television Awards on Wednesday night as she collected an award for her documentary on late husband Derek Draper with her two children by her side.

During the heartwarming family moment, Kate’s teenage daughter Darcey was spotted making a sweet gesture towards her younger brother Billy by moved fans. The glam ceremony took a turn as their mum won the award for Best Authored Documentary.

Darcey, 18, who lost her beloved father Derek Draper at the beginning of the year, was seen sweetly comforting her younger brother 15, at London’s 02 Arena as Good Morning Britain star Kate, 57, made a tear-jerking speech after winning the gong for her devastating documentary on the hardships of caring for her late husband Derek, who died after a four-year battle after suffering with complications from Covid.

When it was announced that Derek’s Story – which followed the final year of their late father’s life – had won the award for Best Authored Documentary, the cameras cut to siblings Darcey and Billy who beamed with pride as their mum stood up to accept the award. Viewers then noticed that Darcey lovingly rubbed her younger brother’s shoulders as he was overcome with emotion during the special moment.

While accepting her speech, Kate left audience members in tears as she dedicated the award to her late husband and all the carers across the UK who she insisted don’t get enough credit for all the hard and stressful work they do in looking after their loved-ones – something she did for Derek for the last year of his life.

Kate began her moving speech: “This is a bittersweet one isn’t it? It’s very bitter to be here, with the gorgeous Darcey and Billy. I promised them they didn’t have to say anything. We’re halfway through the first year of firsts really. A first Easter and first birthdays, without Derek. It’s so strange to be here for the first Television Awards without him.”

Earlier in the evening, Darcey and Billy walked the red carpet alongside their mum, and the teenager looked stunning in a long polka dot gown as she posed for photos alongside her younger brother, who looked dapper in a black tuxedo.

After seeing Darcey shine on the red carpet, fans flocked to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their admiration for the teenager. “Kate Garraway’s daughter is so beautiful and so strong already. She is going to grow into an incredible young woman,” one gushed. Another echoed: “Wow! Darcey Draper is stunning. Her dad would be so proud of her.”

Someone else voiced: “Those two kids have been through so much. They’ve not only lost their father, but they’ve lost him in front of the whole world. They are both a credit to Kate and of course, their late dad Derek.”

Kate’s emotional National Television Awards win comes after she paid tribute to Derek on Tuesday as she marked what would be her 20th wedding anniversary with the former lobbyist. At the time, Kate shared a video with her 1.3M Instagram followers explaining what the day meant to her.

“Today would’ve been my 20th wedding anniversary to Derek. I mean, it still is my 20th wedding anniversary to Derek, it’s just one of those days, that we’ve talked about, like Christmas to come, Easter. All of those things – his birthday – where you really feel a punch to the stomach.

“This one, particularly, I’ve been feeling really sorry for myself, I’m afraid, because it’s such a personal thing. The others are as much, when he was here, made about the family, friends, all of that, whereas this day is so particularly special to him and I. The fact that he’s not here makes me feel very sad and notice his absence like a roaring, roaring train.”

She went on: “I’ve been the leaning into the grief, as everyone says you have to, and I’ve been re-reading some of his lovely anniversary messages on previous cards which I feel so grateful to have had that kind of romance and love in my life. I’m so lucky.”
