Conor McGregor believes Floyd Mayweather broke a verbal agreement over a rematch in the cage.

McGregor made his professional boxing debut against ring legend Mayweather seven years ago today, losing by stoppage in the 10th round. The Irishman earned £100million from the fight which was the second most watched bout in history behind Mayweather’s win over Manny Pacquiao.

And McGregor claims he should have had the chance to avenge his defeat – in MMA “That was the original,” McGregor said of his fight with Mayweather during an interview on Fox Sports. “It was a verbal agreement, I box him, and he fights me. But you know, he didn’t honour it. He didn’t honour it yet. Who knows? I would go against him in another boxing bout, I’d like another crack at it. “I can always say it is another boxing fight and then just bend the rules a little bit when we’re in there maybe.”

UFC CEO Dana White was also open to the prospect of a second fight under his banner. “I don’t know, we’ll find out,” he said when asked about a rematch in the cage. “I’m interested. Obviously he’s interested, and the last time we were both interested you saw what happened. I know Conor wants it.”

McGregor has long claimed he had the better of Mayweather at points during their fight, and that a rematch would be see him have his hand raised. “Don’t forget, I played ping pong with Floyd’s head,” he tweeted and deleted last year. “I carried him! In the rematch, I am going to use this style of attack but alongside a more destructive set of shots on top also. Before, it was just ping pong, this time it was ping pong and babe Ruth with a baseball bat. KO incoming.

“Brain too fast, vision too sharp. I call it making contact with the ball. To develop it, practice keeping a tennis ball in the air with your punches. Sync this work with power work and destroy everything with ease. This game is very much alive and I fancy the pants off it! 100 per cent Acc! Sir Cap’aLot.”

Mayweather won for the 50th time as a professional when he beat McGregor and has since embarked on a lucrative exhibition tour. Last weekend he was declared the winner of his rematch against John Gotti III in Mexico after eight lacklustre rounds which will be remembered for Mayweather sacking the referee during the bout.
