Rob Rinder on ‘taking away cancer’s power’ after losing two people ‘close to him’ to the disease

Rob Rinder previously opened up about the heartbreaking loss of two people “close to him” after they died after being diagnosed with cancer.

The TV presenter took part in the celebrity version of The Great British Bake Off back in 2020, in aid of Stand Up to Cancer.

Rob – who is on Amazing Hotels: Life Beyond the Lobby today (October 27) – was joined by the likes of Kelly Brook and Carol Vorderman to try and raise money for charity. And it turns out this was something that was really close to Rob’s heart.

Speaking ahead of his stint on The Great British Bake Off, Rob opened up on the heartbreaking reason he decided to sign up for the show.

He told Channel 4 back in 2020: “All of us have been affected by cancer in some way. Every single family.” Rob added: “In my case, there are two people close to me who sadly lost their battle with cancer.”

The GMB star then went on to share how he is adamant that we “remove” the “power” that cancer has.

‘Take away the terror’

He said: “I think it’s important that we’re part of a wholesale community change in the conversation about cancer: Removing its power, taking away the terror.

“That makes it less frightening for people when they’re diagnosed with cancer. It makes people more likely to get smear tests or check their testicles,” he then added.

‘People are able to live with the disease and will beat it’

However, Rob did then point out that there is still some “increasingly good news about cancer”.

“That lots of cancers are now curable,” he explained. Rob then went on: “The extraordinary amount of work going on around the world is making it even better. We must not forget the good news. That huge numbers of people are able to live with the disease and will beat it.

“If we’re going to fight something, it’s always good to do so with a positive mindset. And I think Stand Up to cancer articulates that in the most powerful way possible,” the star then conclude.
